CCL2 and systemic lupus erythematosus: In SLE patients, type I interferons (IFNs) drive an increase in elevated inflammatory chemokines monocyte chemotactic protein-1 [MCP-1] and macrophage inflammatory protein 1α, triggering recruitment of monocytes into the subendothelial space and the upregulation of scavenger receptors such as CD36 (elevated in SLE monocytes) and scavenger receptor A (SR-A) (51–54).
