CD4 and HIV infectious disease: Furthermore, progressed HIV infections result in low CD4 levels at treatment initiation, which have been associated with poor CD4 reconstitution and reduced maintenance.4–6 Very early treatment initiation may therefore lead to rapid and durable immune reconstitution, which could open the opportunity for scheduled treatment interruptions and the possibility for a life without daily treatment for early-treated, perinatally HIV-acquired infants.1,7–12
