ACE2 and infection: Infection with SARS-CoV-2 (also a beta coronavirus) follows a pattern that is similar to that reported for SARS-CoV and MERS-CoV.11 Previous studies revealed that SARS-CoV utilizes angiotensin converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) as a receptor for cell entry; this finding provided solid support of evidence suggesting that SARS-CoV originated in bats.12 By contrast, the cellular receptor used by the MERS-CoV is the enzyme dipeptidyl peptidase 4 (DPP4).
