MMP8 and infection: Upon arrival at the infection site, these innate immune cells promote a boost in inflammation through production and/or secretion of a variety of enzymes that result in tissue remodeling, such as the metalloproteinase-8 (MMP-8) (Dieffenbach et al., 2021) , and of reactive oxygen species (ROS) that promote not only parasite killing but also immunopathology (Díaz-Gandarilla et al., 2013; Ferraz et al., 2015).
