Furthermore, the fact that variants within HKDC1 are associated with glucose levels in pregnant women (Hayes et al. 2013; Guo et al. 2015; Kanthimathi et al. 2016; Tan et al. 2019) and considering the relationship between abnormal glucose levels and preeclampsia (Joffe et al. 1998; Weissgerber and Mudd 2015), it is also possible that natural selection has targeted variants at HKDC1 due to its role in glucose metabolism.
