The wet form, i.e., with neovascularisation, has been characterized by the presence of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in the retinal pigment epithelium-Bruch’s membrane, vessels, and stroma; indeed, MMP-9 is known to promote an angiogenic phenotype among choroidal endothelial cells in AMD [82,83]. This evidence concerns the gene MMP2 and age-related macular degeneration.
