Several mechanisms of AGE–RAGE-axis action leading to carcinogenesis were proposed by Malik et al.: (i) enhancement of the proliferation of cancer cells and activation of numerous pathways by AGE–RAGE, resulting in exacerbating the oncogenesis in the cells; (ii) activation of the survival response of cancer cells by inhibiting the apoptotic processes and spreading immortal cells around the tissues; and (iii) overexpression of RAGE in tumor cells and its interaction with ligands other than AGEs (S100 proteins).
