In COVID-19, liver damage could be related, at least in part, to a direct cytopathic effect of the virus given the higher expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) receptors (which are considered the cellular receptor for SARS-CoV-2) on the surface of the liver and bile duct epithelial cells [20,21]. This evidence concerns the gene ACE2 and COVID-19.
