The MT-RNR2 gene encodes the mitochondrial 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA), and it is also associated with the production of humanin (HN), a peptide that has been shown to be a neuroprotective factor for AD through the suppression of apoptotic cell death when discovered [52] and that, since then, has been associated with different processes and age-related diseases [53].
