Indeed, an alteration of SOD functions may have dramatic consequences: for instance, the pathogenesis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis or Alzheimer’s disease is strongly linked to a genetic alteration of SOD1 [2,20]; a defective SOD2 is incompatible with life, as indicated by the knocked-out mice model [21]; and cardiovascular diseases are probably linked to point mutations of SOD3 [22].
