This effect, together with the increased activity of mitochondrial Mn-SOD and the upregulated expression of antioxidant genes, may exert synergistic actions in mitigating the hepatic mitochondrial lesions of IUGR piglets, with evidence of the decreases in mitochondrial swelling and caspase-9 activity, as well as an increase in mitochondrial membrane potential, in the liver of piglets fed a polydatin-supplemented diet. This evidence concerns the gene SOD2 and fetal growth restriction.
