The results of the EMPA-REG OUTCOME trial were the first to demonstrate that empagliflozin in sodium-glucose cotransport-2 inhibitor (SGLT-2i) was not only effective in controlling blood glucose in patients with type 2 diabetes but also in reducing the risk of cardiovascular (CV) death and hospitalization for HF, and the results implied that patients with HF without diabetes may benefit from it as well (5). This evidence concerns the gene SLC5A2 and hydrops fetalis.
