Cleavage of PARP-1 by caspases is considered to be a hallmark of apoptosis and has been implicated in several neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s disease, cerebral ischemia, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson’s disease, NMDA-mediated cytotoxicity and brain tumors (51).
