For that purpose, the objectives of this study were to develop and validate a specific assay for the measurement of PCT in pig saliva and to evaluate changes in its concentration in two different situations: a) in an experimental model of sepsis by the administration of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to pigs, which was compared with a model of non-septic inflammation induced by turpentine oil and b) in pigs from a commercial farm with meningitis, which is a condition associated with sepsis and whose treatment is often related to the use of large amounts of antibiotics [14–16]. Here, CALCA is linked to meningitis.
