Interestingly, during chronic inflammation driven by celiac disease, loss of BTNL8 expression by the gut epithelium was accompanied by the reduction of Vγ4Vδ1+ γδ IELs and by the generation of IFN-γ producing Vδ1+ γδ IELs whose TCR lacked reactivity against BTNL3 and BTNL8 (36). The gene discussed is BTNL8; the disease is celiac disease.
