However, the infusion of CRISPR-edited CD34+ cells using CTX001 in two patients (one with SCD and one with TDT β-thalassemia) (NCT03745287 and NCT03655678) had high levels of allelic editing in bone marrow (up to 80% edited cells) and blood (around 60% edited cells), total hemoglobin level around 14 g/dL, increases in fetal hemoglobin, transfusion independence, and elimination of vaso-occlusive episodes in the patient with SCD more than a year after treatment (Frangoul et al., 2021).
