NEK6 and neoplasm: Nek6 is overexpressed in malignant tumours in a number of human cancer cell lines and has been shown to play a role in causing distant metastasis [174,175,176,177,178,179], while ectopic expression of wild-type, but not kinase-dead, Nek6 promoted (while silencing of Nek6 decreased) anchorage-independent growth, a critical hallmark of cancer [180].
