ACE2 and COVID-19: We hypothesized that severe COVID-19 (direct enterocyte infection and systemic cytokines) causes leaky gut and gut translocation of PAMPs that facilitate NETosis and sepsis severity, for the following reasons: (i) because direct enterocyte infection by SAR-CoV-2 through ACE-2 and the presence of diarrhea in severe COVID-19 that might be associated with TJs defect [28]; and (ii) because of the associations between COVID-19-activated factors (cytokine storm, neutrophilia, endotoxemia, and NETosis) [29] and gut barrier defect, which are mentioned in [22,30,31].
