The most frequent types of DM are type 1 diabetes (-T1DM- mediated by autoimmune destruction of pancreatic ß cells and absolute insulin deficiency), type 2 diabetes (-T2DM- caused by progressive loss of insulin secretion in the context of insulin resistance) and gestational DM (first diagnosed during pregnancy), but there are also other, less frequent forms of the disease, such as monogenic DM or drug-induced DM [15]. The gene discussed is INS; the disease is diabetes mellitus.
