The human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP), also known as amylin, is a 37-amino acid peptide hormone that is the main constituent of the islet amyloid mainly found in the pancreatic islets of T2DM patients, but also in many organs including the brain, the heart, and the kidney (Westermark et al., 1987; Cooper et al., 1988; de Koning et al., 1995; Despa et al., 2012; Srodulski et al., 2014). Here, IAPP is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
