CETP and Cirrhosis: As the homozygotes of CETP deficiency are apparently resistant for development of the fatal complication of Schistosomiasis japonica, i.e., hepatic granulomatosis and cirrhosis in the mouse model (Okumura-Noji et al., 2001), it is conceivable that this disease was one of the factors that caused high prevalence of the CETP gene mutations in the East Asia.
