Citrullination impairs vimentin filament assembly, which enhances the formation of soluble precursors that are transported extracellularly (Inagaki et al., 1989) and that subsequently elicit autoimmune responses in joints affected by rheumatoid arthritis (Musaelyan et al., 2018) and in liver fibrosis (Vassiliadis et al., 2012).
