Since ACE2 transforms components of the pro-inflammatory RAS axis such as Ang II into components of the anti-inflammatory axis such as Ang 1–9 and particularly Ang 1–7, dysregulation of tissue RAS (by SARS-CoV-2 binding to ACE2) has been proposed as a major mechanism of progression of COVID-19 severity (19).
