Genome-wide association studies in schizophrenia and autism spectrum disorder have implicated the major histocompatibility complex on chromosome 6, with key loci that code for specific cell-surface proteins essential within the immune system. Additional variants on genes coding for inflammatory cytokines have also been implicated in schizophrenia risk. Results presented in our analysis support the potential role of IL-6 with brain structure and potentially related neuropsychiatric disorders. Here, IL6 is linked to autism spectrum disorder.
