The protein encoded by Ppargc1a gene (also known as PGC-1α in human) is peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1α (PGC-1α), as a transcriptional coactivator, it is an important regulator of energy metabolism [34], overexpressed PGC-1α alleviates oxidative stress and decreases apoptotic cell death in endothelial cells [34], and upregulation of PGC-1α is associated with reduction of oxidative stress and inflammation in diabetic myocardium [35] and attenuation of COPD in mice [36]. Here, PPARGC1A is linked to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
