In the initial stage of atherosclerosis, oxLDL activates endothelial cells by inducing the expression of several cell surface adhesion molecules including ICAM-1 and VCAM-1 which recruit circulating monocytes from the blood into intima, where monocytes differentiate into macrophages and become foam cells by internalizing modified lipoproteins [2,3]. This evidence concerns the gene ICAM1 and atherosclerosis.
