Photoreceptor apoptotic death is the final step of several retinal disorders, and the deregulation of the nerve growth factor (NGF) pathway observed in retinal degeneration models supports the hypothesis that a profound alteration of NGF pathway balance may account for the progressive neuronal cell death and photoreceptor loss (Santos et al., 2012; Garcia et al., 2017). This evidence concerns the gene NGF and retinal degeneration.
