Individuals with infrequent interstitial deletions, without involvement of the SHANK3 gene, may exhibit an indistinguishable phenotype, raising the possibility that many of the characteristics of PMS may be under the influence of other additional genes located in the 22q13.32 [14] region, or may affect regulatory regions of the SHANK3 gene or have a position effect [2,4].
