Minimally modified lipoproteins from the circulation or modified lipoproteins from the intima can be internalized by ECs via the lectin-like oxidized LDL receptor 1 (LOX-1) and be destined for lysosomal degradation, which activates the ECs and initiates endothelial dysfunction [Figure 2, reviewed in (101)]. The gene discussed is OLR1; the disease is endothelial dysfunction.
