Interestingly, IL-22, IL-23 and IL-17 were shown to be significantly increased at both protein and mRNA levels in inflamed salivary glands of patients with primary Sjögren’s syndrome (pSS), indicating that the Th17/IL-23 system may play a pro-inflammatory role in the pathogenesis of pSS (Ciccia et al., 2012). The gene discussed is IL22; the disease is Sjogren syndrome.
