For example, low‐dose prednisone plus interferon beta‐1b improved flu‐like symptoms compared to interferon beta‐1b alone in a study of 71 patients with multiple sclerosis.(16) In another study of interferon beta‐1b treatment of patients with multiple sclerosis, low‐dose steroids decreased the percentage of macrophage and B‐lymphocytes producing IL‐6.(17) This fits with other studies that have demonstrated IL‐6 to be a proinflammatory cytokine with a central role in mediating fever and acute phase response. The gene discussed is IL6; the disease is multiple sclerosis.
