Examples include the development of therapeutics targeting specific genetic forms of PD such as GBA-related PD (Peterschmitt et al., 2021a,b) and LRRK2-associated PD (Schneider and Alcalay, 2020) with ongoing clinical trials, as well as the identification of new molecular fingerprints and other pathophysiological mechanisms in PD neurodegeneration that may be targeted in the future for development of novel therapies (Zeng et al., 2018). The gene discussed is GBA1; the disease is Parkinson disease.
