STAT4 and rheumatoid arthritis: Genetic polymorphisms leading to increased expression and activation of inflammasome proteins (e.g., NLRP3), TLRs (e.g., TLR7, TLR9), transcription factors (e.g., STAT4), and IFN signaling proteins (e.g., IRF5) have been associated with increased susceptibility and severity of several autoimmune diseases including SLE, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and multiple sclerosis (Cho and Gregersen, 2011; Yang and Chiang, 2015).
