Although 30% of total IL-6 production, partly stimulated by TNF-α, appears to come from adipose tissue, adipocytes contribute only up to 10% as the rest is produced by macrophages infiltrating adipose tissue [105,108], with a shift towards their M1 inflammatory phenotype as fat depots increase, producing more TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β and contributing to insulin resistance [109].
