IL1A and infection: Consistently, conditional knockout of Atg5 in bone marrow cells (including macrophages and granulocytes) in mice resulted in a significant increase in spleen and lung bacterial load and a shortened survival period upon infection with Mtb. At the same time, knockout mice showed signs of inflammation in the lungs, with increased neutrophils and elevated cytokines IL-1α, IL-12, and CXCL1.
