Small molecules and monoclonal antibodies targeting VEGF or VEGFR could induce transient tumor vessel normalization in preclinical models by: (1) promoting endothelial cell tightening and reducing the enlarged size and tortuosity of vessels [10,11], (2) promoting pericyte recruitment and increasing vessel maturation [3,11,12], and (3) activating metalloproteinases, remodeling the tumor matrix, and normalizing the basement membrane [3,11,12]. The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is neoplasm.
