The p75NTR receptor was found to be expressed in motor neurons (Lowry et al., 2001) and Schwann cells (Kerkhoff et al., 1991) of damaged nerves of ALS patients post-mortem, but not in that of healthy age- and sex-matched controls (Kerkhoff et al., 1991), further supporting a pathophysiological role for p75NTR. The gene discussed is NGFR; the disease is amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
