Three of these genes (GPX2,FTH1 andSRXN1) are targets of the transcription factor Nrf2 which is the master inducer of antioxidant responses against oxidative and electrophilic challenges.32 Alteration of the redox balance due to defective Nrf2 activity has been associated with cognitive impairment.33 As such, hippocampal atrophy in early stages of disease seem to be associated with an antioxidant response in blood, aimed to restore redox homeostasis.
