The PML gene was so named as it was identified as a tumour suppressor gene that was disrupted in acute promyelocytic leukaemia, where it is fused to retinoic acid receptor alpha (RARA) gene as a result of the chromosomal translocation t(15;17) (Nisole et al., 2013; Salomoni and Pandolfi, 2002).
