There are four known streptococcal zinc metalloprotease (zmp) genes, zmpA (commonly referred to as iga), zmpB, zmpC and zmpD. The genes zmpA and zmpB are known to cleave the primary mediator of human mucosal immunity, IgA1, and are present in the three primary bacterial species causing of meningitis: Neisseria meningitidis, S. pneumoniae and Haemophilus influenzae [20, 27, 28]. The gene discussed is CD79A; the disease is infectious meningitis.
