This pattern of MTL binding is consistent with the neuropathological literature (Braak et al., 2011) and may reflect an age-related process of tau accumulation in this region (Tomlinson et al., 1970), the so-called primary age-related tauopathy (Jellinger et al., 2015), which has been shown to result in hippocampal atrophy and mild amnestic deficits that are independent of amyloid-β (Josephs et al., 2017). The gene discussed is MAPT; the disease is hippocampal atrophy.
