From a biological point of view, the presence of comorbidities (diabetes, preeclampsia, cardiovascular disease, and hypertension) or older age is associated with reduced production of the protective peptide angiotensin-(1–7) by the membrane-bound angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), leading to vasoconstriction, inflammation, fibrosis, edema, and lung damage [12]. This evidence concerns the gene ACE2 and hypertensive disorder.
