Several clinical trials investigating interleukin inhibitors (IL-1 inhibitor anakinra, and IL-6 inhibitors tocilizumab or sarilumab) revealed that IL-1 inhibition, but not IL-6 inhibition, was associated with a significant reduction of mortality in patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19, ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome), and hyperinflammation [45]. This evidence concerns the gene IL1B and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
