Furthermore, in vivo studies using PCSK9 knockout mice have been established and demonstrated that the elimination of PCSK9 showed the phenotype of hypocholesterolemia, with an estimated 80% reduction in LDL-c, a strong decrease in the atherosclerosis development, and a significantly increased sensitivity to statin treatment [47,48], thus making PCSK9 as an interesting target for LDL-lowering therapies. This evidence concerns the gene PCSK9 and atherosclerosis.
