Functionally, adiponectin (a 244-amino-acid-long collagen-like hormone protein, also referred to as AdipoQ) is involved in the modulation of energy metabolism, such as glucose and fatty acid oxidation, insulin sensitivity, inflammation, and atherosclerosis, being the most abundant circulating adipokine secreted by the adipose tissue [11,12,13]. Here, ADIPOQ is linked to atherosclerosis.
