GCG and inflammatory bowel disease: Over the past decades, it was found that flavonoids, which are phytochemicals with biological activity ubiquitously distributed in edible plants, can directly treat IBD through various mechanisms, including anti-inflammatory and antioxidant actions, which preserve the epithelial barrier; immunomodulatory functions in the intestine, which shape the composition and function of the microbiota; and the modulation of specific enterohormones (such as glucagon-like peptide 1 and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors) [204,205,206].
