A recent study found that a Chinese herbal medicine used for the treatment of stroke, Yizhi (AOM), can significantly upregulate the expression of BDNF and paromomycin receptor kinase B (TrkB) in the hippocampus, thereby enhancing adult hippocampal neurogenesis and improving MCAO deficiency, thereby enhancing spatial learning, memory and cognitive functions in rats (37). The gene discussed is BDNF; the disease is Stroke.
