While characterizing the impact of IRE1 kinase activity and it’s here proposed kinase substrate, FMRP, on macrophage functions, our current study revealed a role for an “IRE1‐FMRP signaling axis” in the regulation of macrophage cholesterol trafficking and efferocytosis, which are among the primary cellular mechanisms that can regress atherosclerosis (Fig 7). This evidence concerns the gene FMR1 and atherosclerosis.
