The increase in hepatic DG and TG species containing MUFAs and PUFAs after empagliflozin treatment of ZDF diabetic rats might involve changes in the hepatic expression and/or activity of relevant enzymes in MUFA and PUFA biosynthesis, the Δ9, Δ5-and Δ6-fatty acid desaturases (Nakamura and Nara, 2004), whose levels and activity have been found altered in hepatic pathological conditions and in animal models of hepatic disease, and whose deficiency has been associated to liver metabolic diseases (Araya et al., 2010; Chiappini et al., 2017; Gromovsky et al., 2018; Palladini et al., 2019). This evidence concerns the gene FADS6 and liver disorder.
