Recent studies showed that the metabotropic receptors P2Y1, P2Y2, P2Y6, and the ligand-gated receptor P2X7 lead to experimental atherosclerosis by mediating leukocyte recruitment to the vessel wall and caused vascular inflammation by promoting adhesion molecule expression, cytokine expression as well as nucleotide-binding oligomerization domain-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3)-inflammasome activation13–17. This evidence concerns the gene P2RY2 and atherosclerosis.
